Nephrology

Renal medicine, also known as Nephrology, is a field of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and care of patients suffering from kidney diseases. This field covers all medical conditions that affect the kidneys including acute kidney injuries and end-stage chronic kidney diseases that may require a total renal replacement either by a dialysis or Kidney Transplant.

The Department of Nephrology and Renal Transplant at PRS Hospital offers complete care for patients with kidney disease. The department handles the entire spectrum of kidney diseases, stone diseases, complicated urosepsis, dialysis and kidney transplants. Various types of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) especially those that are secondary to sepsis, poisoning, drug overdose, snake envenomation, post surgical AKI are dealt with utmost perfection and care. All unstable patients with AKI are supported in Medical lCU with a bedside dialysis facility .

The department is supported by a renal dialysis unit with seventeen state of the art haemodialysis stations for stable chronic dialysis patients. More than hundred chronic kidney disease patients receive haemodialysis in 3-4 sessions every day. On an average, 1000+ haemodialysis are performed per month in the unit. Latest generation computerized bicarbonate haemodialysis machine provides extremely high quality and safe dialysis for chronic patients

In medical, cardiac and post operative ICCUs, highly sophisticated modalities of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) like SLED(Sustained Low Efficiency Dialysis), CVVHD (Continuous Venovenous Haemo-dialysis with Filtration) are done for needy patients. For kidney diseases like HUS /TTP, Good Pasteur's syndrome, SLE etc and for non renal conditions like Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain Barre Syndrome, Therapeutic Plasma Exchange & Plasmapheresis are available under critical care supervision. Also Charcoal haemoperfusion, a life saving procedure for the treatment of drug overdose & poisoning is performed in the unit.

The centre also ensures seamless interface of patient care with other units like Vascular Surgery for creation of AV Fistula and Interventional Cardiology for Renal Angiogram & PTRA etc.

Kidney transplantation is a procedure done for permanent failure of both kidneys in which the patient receives a new kidney from a suitable donor. We have an excellent renal transplant facility at our center.
